January is the month where the planning for 2020 begins. We ask our liaisons on the Reservation where the focus is for the upcoming year. Past years it’s been backpacks and school supplies, other years it’s been building projects. We’ve built a solar-powered geodesic dome, a hockey rink, a synthetic basketball court, and more. We have also sent musical instruments, amplifiers, PA systems, clothing, and recently have brought food for needy families.
It takes a lot of planning each year for Love Has No Color to impact the kids on the Reservation. Some of the most fun we have each year is receiving the marching orders of the upcoming year.
One year we had a basketball camp, complete with pro-basketball players and a celebrity author that works with some of the most well-known NBA superstars. Seeing the kids Google him and watch their faces light up with joy was amazing!
Another year we brought a pro hockey player from Canada. Along with the player we brought dozens of autographed sticks the kids could play street hockey with and eventually play in the outdoor rink LHNC built in Poplar.
We’ve also had a parade in Poplar! Complete with horses, floats, and lots of flying candy eagerly picked up by the kids.
Who could forget the year that tennis was ‘introduced’ to the Reservation and dozens of rackets and balls were handed out?
Some interesting possibilities looming on the horizon include family portraits, caricature pictures, building drones with cameras, and tons of other ideas!
Dates for this year’s Fun Days will be released in the next couple of months. It usually falls on the second week of August.
Happy New Year from all of us at LHNC headquarters! We’re so thankful for everyone who donates and participates. We’re looking forward to seeing what we can do this year.
